Should I repair or replace my computer?

As computer technician who has seen so many computers and done thousands of computer repairs, I’ve certainly been asked “Is my computer worth fixing, or should I just buy a new one?” many times.

When it comes to “Repairs VS Replace”, some think you should repair while others think you should replace.

So what’s my answer to the inevitable question? Most of the times, my answer is “you should repair it”.

Because, more often than not, the overall cost of fixing a computer is lower than buying a new one.

I myself use a 9-year-old laptop for home, and a 7-year-old laptop for work. Trust me, I’m tech savvy, I want my computers to be fast and reliable. When I click on an app, I expect it to open immediately.

With the right tweak, your “old” computer can do more than what you need. Most of us are not Hollywood movie makers after all.

But, there are times when you should consider replacing.

Some computer users don’t expect their devices to fail, and see this as a sign that the computer is dying and that they need to replace it.

Like most electronics, laptops and desktop computers can break at least once in the device’s lifetime. And usually it’s not a major heart operation.

Learning more about a computer’s lifespan can help inform your decision to repair or replace your faulty computer.

What is the average lifespan of a computer?

In its early days, computers could last very long: 8 to 10+ years. Now they don’t.

Computers now last 3 to 4 years then a repair is needed to get it working again. Its performance may also drop after a few years.

After 8-10 years of use, the computer will become incompatible with newer operating systems, and are unable to be upgraded.

The system may still work, but will lose support from the manufacturers as they consider these devices as obsolete. We’ll cover more about this later.

This might be quite unusual, but we do know of a lot of people who hang on to their old computers way past its 10-year lifespan. We’ve seen a lot of computer users still using old laptops running on Windows Vista or Windows XP.

These are mostly for sentimental reasons or that they are simply used to its interface and OS. If the device works, this is completely fine.

The downside is, these computers are considered outmoded, so they are quite difficult to fix. So you might want to consider how long you’ve had the laptop before you decide to buy a new one to replace it.

Is my computer worth fixing though?

One thing to know though, repairing your computer can’t be more expensive than buying a new one.

In the above infographic, I’ve taken an example of purchasing a decent computer that costs $1,500 (AUD) to buy as a new unit.

Even assuming that the worst case scenario of repair options, that the computer is unreliable and needs 2 major repairs within 4 years, it’s still $900 less than replacing it.

This is also assuming the best case scenario of replacing: the computer works flawlessly for 4 years, which is unlikely.

If you only need replacement repairs like a cracked laptop screen or battery replacement, think of it this way: These faulty parts don’t have much to do with the laptop’s performance, so all you need to do is replace them and the laptop will be good as new.

Most repair services can also help you upgrade your computer as well, if you’re looking to enhance its performance.

When faced with certain more expensive repairs like motherboard replacement, you may need to re-consider and ask whether this fix is worth it or not.

Useful computer upgrades for better performance

As we’ve mentioned above, the overall cost of repairing or upgrading a laptop or desktop computer shouldn’t be more than buying a new one. There’s nothing more disappointing than finding out that your new laptop isn’t as powerful as you thought.

If you’re looking for a bit of a boost for your current laptop that you’ve had for a while, you could look into upgrading its hardware.

This could get your computer to perform much better than it ever has, and possibly give it a longer lifespan as well. Here are a few computer upgrade options for both laptop and desktop computers that you can consider.

Replacing HDD with SSD

Samsung SSD

Solid-state drives, also known as flash storage, have gradually become a known standard for a lot of newer laptop and desktop computers. They are much more durable compared to traditional hard disk drives, as HDDs contain moving machinery and SSDs don’t.

Performance-wise, SSDs definitely win the race. SSDs can deliver speeds up to 16 times faster than an HDD, and don’t draw as much power as well. They run on NAND memory chips, which aren’t as fragile as the spinning disks inside hard drives.

Because of its durability and great performance, an SSD upgrade has become quite a popular computer upgrade.

While they often cost a bit more than traditional hard drives, upgrading to an SSD can deliver you great benefits.

This upgrade works for both laptops and desktop computers. If you’re used to a large amount of space on your desktop, you can use the SSD as the primary drive, and a bigger 3.5-inch hard drive for secondary storage.

You may also try using the two drives as a hybrid drive, which requires a little bit of software configuring first.

Blazing fast with NVMe SSD

NVMe SSDs have been around for some years. There were expensive in their early days. Now they have become affordable and installed in most new computers.

How fast?

With NVMe SSD installed, whenever you click on Google Chrome web browser or Microsoft Edge web browser, it will open up instantly. Opening Microsoft Outlook takes about 2 seconds. Opening Microsoft Word or Excel takes about 2 or 3 seconds.

If your computer supports the latest NVMe SSD, and you opt for premium ones such as Samsung or Intel, it will be even faster.

Just ask any computer enthusiasts, they will tell you that they have NVMe SSD installed on their computers. It’s incredibly pleasant to use your computer with NVMe SSD installed as the main drive.

Quick note: many Apple computers and new Windows laptops nowaday come with NVMe SSD installed.

Adding more RAM to your computer

Having more RAM capacity can boost your computer’s multitasking capabilities. The amount of RAM you have determines how much data can be temporarily stored there while you’re working on it.

You’ll get a smoother computing experience if you have more RAM, where data can be readily accessed from it.

4GB is usually the bare minimum for normal functioning, and 8GB is the recommended capacity for basic tasks.

Upgrading to 16GB of RAM would be useful if you do graphics or video editing work. This upgrade could make things run smoother for you.

That said though, you might not need a RAM upgrade if you already are upgrading to an SSD. An SSD is already fast enough for multitasking purposes.

Can my old computer handle the latest apps?

In most cases, Yes!

Unless you use your computer for professional movie editing, your 8 year-old computer can do more than what you need. It just needs the right tweak and changes to be lightning fast.

Most of us use computers for email, word pressing, web browsing, videos. As long as your computer is not a $300 entry level one, it will be able to run fast and do all you need it to do, provided that it has the right upgrades for it.

When a computer has become so old, the spare parts and tools needed to fix it are less available. Not to mention how hard it will be to fix.

If you do decide to get rid of your computer and buy a new one instead, don’t forget to dispose of the old one correctly.

Throwing it away in the trash will just create e-waste, which contains toxic and hazardous materials that will just pile up in a landfill. Instead of throwing it away, you could arrange an e-waste council collection or drop it off at a collection depot.

Trading in your old computer is also an option. Computer repair shops often take in old computers for refurbishment or for their spare parts. Plus, you might be able to get some money out of it as well.

Your laptop data can be rescued without fixing the computer

It’s more than likely that your data can be rescued without your computer getting repaired.

However, there is always a chance of data loss when your computer breaks down. Having a regular backup is always recommended.

Planned obsolescence?

Many computers still work after 10 years, amazingly well in facts. But why are we forced to replace it?

Could this be “planned obsolescence” forced by big tech companies like Microsoft and Apple?

If the computer is working so well, what’s the reason to ditch it?

Yes, you could say it’s “planned obsolescence”, but it might be a necessary one.

Technology needs to progress to achieve innovation. And when it does, old ones become obsolete. And we all need innovation.

Having said that, if your old computer serves you well and does what you need, do you really need the latest, most innovative technology that you may actually never use?

Or are you just buying the latest iPhone but never use it to its full “innovative” potential?

I dare to say that most of us buy a new computer, or a new smart phone because we want it, not because we need it.

Make no mistake, I’m guilty of this as well.

My new OPPO phone has all the cool features and amazing LED display, even though my 2 year-old Huawei phone was still perfectly working before I replaced it.

Though, my Dell Latitude work laptop is 7 years old, my MacBook Pro home laptop is 9 years old. Both have been working so well. The Dell even survived a major coffee spill on its keyboard without a glitch.

Being a tech person, I use all the latest apps, tech tools in the market. I also use Adobe Photoshop on my Dell laptop, and often have multiple web browser tabs open. I don’t expect to lose any productivity.

I don’t want to wait for my computer to open anything. When I click on Google Chrome browser, I expect it to open quickly, with little to none waiting time.

Both laptops can handle these tools perfectly. This is an example that old hardware still can handle many of the latest apps.

You don’t really have to get the latest hardware to handle the latest software.

Disk formatting explained: When should I format my hard drive?

What does formatting a hard drive do?

When you want to wipe a hard drive clean, you can do so by formatting the drive. This process wipes all the data on the drive and sets up a new file system, which allows the operating system (OS) to read and write new data on the drive.

Disk formatting is usually done to prepare a new drive for its first use. It prepares the available space for OS installation and use. The three main things that you can do with a disk format is full data removal, file system change, and possibly refresh your computer for better performance.

If you’re looking to recycle or trade in your computer, you’d probably need to perform a disk format beforehand. You’ll be able to wipe out all your data, so it stays out of the hands of others. Disk formatting also installs a new OS onto the drive, so the next user can start out with a clean slate.

You may also try reinstalling your OS when you come across problems on your computer. Disk formatting could possibly solve a number of software issues. You could try doing this to solve problems like BSOD (blue screen of death) or boot errors. If your computer is running a bit slower that you’re used to, reinstalling the OS could also help as well.

With that said, remember to backup your data before you format the drive. As we’ve learnt, disk formatting wipes all the data off the drive, so you might want to get important data off the drive first. If you only have a few files that you need, just drag and drop onto an external hard drive or cloud storage. Alternatively, you may also use File History (Windows) or Time Machine (Apple macOS) to create full backups onto a hard drive.

How to format a hard drive

The easiest way to format and reinstall the OS on a hard drive is through the computer’s built-in recovery mode. Both Windows and Mac computers have recovery modes accessible from boot up, and you can proceed with the disk formatting there. Another way is by going to Settings > Recovery, then resetting your computer from there.

After you’ve backed up the necessary data, restart your computer to enter recovery mode. For Windows laptops and desktop computers, you’ll need to enter the boot menu. That’s F8 for Dell, Esc for HP, and so on. There’s different keys for different brands of computers. For Macs, you’ll need to press both Command and R. Just press the right keys repeatedly when the logo splash screen comes on after you restart the computer.

Then you can choose to reset the PC, or “reinstall macOS” for Mac computers. There should be an option for you to reset the computer and keep the files, but if you’ve backed up your data, you can just choose the option to wipe everything. This process will take a while, so be prepared to have to sit around for a bit.

Using apps to format a hard drive

There are a number of ways to format a hard drive, and that includes disk management on Windows. You can do this on the same computer, or take out the drive and connect it to a different computer. This gets you better control of the process. Then open Disk Management from the Start menu, and you’ll find your drive there.

Make sure you don’t mix up the drives that you see on the app and format a drive that you didn’t mean to. You might want to rename the drive before you connect it to another computer. After selecting the drive that you want formatted, you can choose to format it.

So you might have formatted a USB drive or hard drive by accident, and lost data as a result. The data has been deleted, but can sometimes be recovered. In most cases, data recovery doesn’t work all the time, but some files can still be salvaged.

Unfortunately for hard drives that have been formatted and have a new OS installed, the chances for data recovery are much slimmer. After a period of use, data sectors where files used to be become overwritten by new information. So the data that used to be on that sector is completely gone. Same goes for deleted files. Once they are overwritten, the data can’t be recovered.

So now we know that formatting a hard drive removes everything altogether. This prepares everything for a clean OS installation. But if you’re just looking to find more storage space out of your drive, you definitely don’t need to format it. You simply need to look for certain unused files and delete them, or move larger files onto an external storage device.

One thing to be sure though, cleaning files does not help to improve your computer’s performance. A lot of computer users think having a lot of files on their computers will slow it down, but it’s actually more about the programs installed on the drive. So giving the drive a clean slate can help with its performance. It won’t be a huge improvement though, since hard drives do lose performance over time. A hard drive replacement or an SSD upgrade would do much better for performance.

How to clean up storage space on your computer

System cleanup or disk cleanup on Windows computers is a built-in tool to help you scan your computer for unused files or previous installation files that you can remove. After a quick scan, you can pick and choose things to clean up your hard disk.

This is a Windows-only app, Apple computers don’t have such a function to help clean up your hard drive. You may try out third-party disk cleanup apps like CC Clean to help identify unused files that can be cleaned for more space.

Look for large media files

Cleaning up documents won’t have that much of an effect as they don’t take up much space usually. Their file sizes are a mere nothing compared to media files like photos and videos. Same goes for installed programs, which usually don’t take up much space. You’re free to uninstall apps that you don’t use anymore, as that can free up some space for the OS to work better.

Look through your media files and go from there. You can transfer them to an external hard drive, or upload them to the cloud. Uploading them to the cloud might take a while depending on your internet speeds, but it’s a secure backup that’s always accessible. As long as you have an internet connection, that is.

Now that you know what formatting does, you can confidently decide what you want to do depending on your data needs. 7 questions about your hard drive that you’ve always wanted to ask

We use our hard drives everyday on our laptop and desktop computers, but most people still have things they don’t know about their drives. Have you ever wondered what wiping the drive does to your data? Or how bad sectors can damage your hard drive?

All those questions and more will be answered in our following guide. Here’s the 7 biggest questions about hard drives, answered.

1. Is data on a formatted drive gone forever?

So you’ve accidentally formatted a drive that you didn’t intend to. Or you forgot to back it up before you did. Not to worry, data on a formatted drive is not gone forever, and can usually be recovered.

This is where data recovery services or software can help you. As long as the drive is still in one piece and that the data was not on a damaged part of the drive, you should be able to recover it. This is only possible if you haven’t started using the formatted drive though. When the data sectors are overwritten, you probably can’t recover old data.

2. Can magnets wipe a hard drive?

This is more of an urban myth. It has some truth to it though, even if it doesn’t apply anymore. Back then, consumer computer storage was mainly in the form of floppy disks. These were storage devices that can be wiped with a magnet. This information was then passed down and applied to future storage drives, which led to this urban legend.

Computer storage technology has come a long way since then, and many advancements have surely been made. Hard drives are way more sturdier than floppy disks, and can’t be wiped with simple magnets. So you certainly don’t have to worry about those fridge magnets lying around your workspace. Unless you work with industrial-strength magnets then, because that’s a different story.

3. Do hard drives last forever?

Hard drives are indeed pretty sturdy with its metal casing and all, but they don’t “last forever”. Yes they can last pretty long, up to 5 years time. However, while they can still work and last long, their performance will drop significantly within that period. So no, they do not last forever.

Bad sectors cause permanent damage on the hard drive and this can lead to data corruption and loss. This is something all computer users can’t avoid. Bad sectors come from things like physical damage and logical faults, and will accumulate over time. Some of these bad sectors, like soft bad sectors, can be repaired. But it’s not the same for physically damaged parts.

When it gets to a point where bad sectors are so spread out across the drive, the drive will start to fail. You may start to experience errors in startup or notice a drop in performance. The only solution to this problem is to replace the drive entirely with a new one.

4. Can abrupt power shutdowns cause bad sectors?

When an abrupt power shutdown happens, like a hard shutdown or sudden power cut, the hard drive also loses its power source. In situations like this, if the hard drive is in the middle of writing data on the disk, it may create bad sectors.

The good thing is though, these should only be logical bad sectors, also known as soft bad sectors. Unlike hard bad sectors, soft bad sectors can be repaired with disk repair software. Even so, it’s always safer to keep this from happening and turn off your computer properly whenever you can.

5. Will wiping the drive get rid of bad sectors?

We all want to get rid of bad sectors. Keeping the hard drive from accumulating bad sectors is an important part of its care. Some might try wiping the drive entirely to get rid of these pesky bad sectors. Unfortunately, that will not work.

Bad sectors are physically damaged parts of a hard drive. This sort of damage is also irreversible. All you can do in this situation is to repair soft bad sectors and mark bad sectors off from the drive.

6. Are SSDs indestructible?

While SSDs do boast much better durability and longer life spans over traditional hard disk drives, they are not entirely indestructible. Solid-state drives are lightweight storage devices that do not contain moving machinery to work. This makes them sturdier and is the superior storage device.

SSDs may not be prone to shock damage or any sort of machinery-related issues, but they are susceptible to other kinds of damage. This includes extreme temperatures. SSDs are more vulnerable to overheating damage than spinning drives, which only rely on spinning rotors to work. Heat can damage the circuitry or memory chips on the SSD. It’s a good idea, not just for the sake of the SSD, to keep your system cooled efficiently. This benefits the whole system, and keeps your computing experience smooth.

7. How many backups do I need?

You definitely need at least one backup. The more the better, actually. You never know what could happen. The external hard drive might fail, or you might find yourself in a situation without an internet connection.

Backups in general are very useful for all computer users. Hard drive failure is a common computer issue that can happen at any time. 7 common DIY computer repair mistakes to avoid

All you need is enough research and the right tools to fix your laptop or desktop computer.

However, some computer users with little technical knowledge make mistakes by following amateur advice from family or friends, or even complete randoms on the internet. Their negligence in following the wrong advice or their ill-preparedness can lead to bad fixes or even further damage on their computer. This can cost you the time needed to fix your computer and possibly more expensive professional repairs.

It’s better to be prepared than be completely in the dark when you’re dealing with complicated and delicate computer hardware. DIY repair mistakes are sometimes something you aren’t aware of and might not be able to catch. Here are some common DIY computer repair mistakes to avoid and learn from:

1. Opening up the computer unnecessarily

While it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with your computer’s hardware, opening up your computer too many times might not be the right thing to do. When you open up your computer unnecessarily before preparing the right tools and parts that you need, you may end up with a higher chance of breaking things. And that’s definitely not what we want.

It’s often better to get advice from trusted sources, or simply from your computer’s manufacturer. Try calling or chatting online with a support representative to diagnose your problem properly. You can usually get the right support advice from them without even leaving your house.

After getting an accurate diagnosis and solution to your issue, we can then start looking at how to get that done. You’ll need the right tools and spare parts to complete the job.

3. Not preparing the right tools for testing and repair

To find out what’s wrong with your laptop or desktop computer, you might need to do some extensive tests on your hardware first. This includes basic diagnostics and in-depth tests on specific parts on your device.

Using boot diagnostics is a good first step in your process. It is also known as pre-boot diagnostics or Apple diagnostics on Mac computers. This is a simple built-in tool on most computers, where you can test almost every hardware part on your laptop or desktop computer. It can report any possible hardware issues on parts like the hard drive, RAM, or optical drives. To enter pre-boot diagnostics, enter a key specific to your computer’s brand (“Esc for HP, “F12” for Dell, “D” for Apple…) when your computer is booting up. Then it should run and find what’s wrong with your computer.

You may also want to try using branded support apps like Dell’s SupportAssist or HP’s Support Assistant. These support apps also come pre-loaded on your computer when you buy it, and can help with diagnosis and troubleshooting as well.

In-depth testing

Other than using general hardware testing tools, you might also need to do some more extensive tests on specific parts on your computer. There’s a chance that you can’t get much conclusive results from running boot diagnostics. It is only a basic diagnostic tool after all. So for these part-specific tests, you’ll need different kinds of tools and software to complete.

Be prepared to have the tools ready to take out parts of your computer for testing. You’ll also need a separate desktop computer for this as well. This gets you better isolation for the part while you test it with dedicated software. A desktop computer will also also come in handy when you need to create a USB bootable installer to reinstall your OS.

A mistake that some amateur computer repairers make is not having the things that they need for testing their computer. This may include your standard toolkit for disassembling your laptop or desktop computer, or the spare parts needed to test for hardware faults.

Some other tools that you may need are: a SATA to USB enclosure box for hard drive testing, spare RAM chips, or power adaptors from kitchen appliances for desktop PSU testing. For parts like the hard drive, you will usually have more options to choose from. As long as the drive is compatible with your computer, you can choose to get a faster drive or one that has more capacity. You can also consider upgrading your hard drive to a solid-state drive as well, if you are looking for a performance boost.

Repairs for laptop screens and motherboards on the other hand, don’t have that much elbow room. You will have to get the same exact part to replace your faulty one. But you probably won’t have to worry much about these. Motherboard and screen repairs might be a bit too complicated as a DIY project. They require a great deal of care and expertise in computer tech that not many computer users have.

5. Not testing thoroughly after repair

To make sure that the fix actually worked and everything is installed properly, take the time to run boot diagnostics again. You can do this before closing up the cover on your laptop or desktop computer. All you need to do is install all the essential parts, and run boot diagnostics. If there is any problem, this could save you the time from taking everything apart again. As we’ve learnt, it’s best not to open up your computer too many times.

6. No backups

Keeping regular backups is a healthy computing habit. Even when your computer is working fine, it’s always useful to have a backup of your files or even your entire OS.

Having a backup will certainly be helpful if your computer crashes, or if anything happens while you fix your computer. It will also make the whole process easier when you don’t have to worry about your data. Keep your data close by with an external drive or simply put it up on a cloud-based storage system.

7. No static protection

While this isn’t that much of a troubling issue for most repairs, protecting yourself from static is always a safe practice. Always turn off and disconnect your computer from its power supply before opening it up. Also, make sure you’re not working on carpeted surfaces or near any pets. That could accelerate the chances of static and also make it harder to disperse.

Learn to ground yourself in case you do catch static while working on your computer. You simply need to discharge the static by touching the ground, or a metal object that is on the ground.

What to do if your Mac won’t boot up: fixing Apple startup issues

A lot of things could cause a Macbook to stop booting up properly, or not even start up at all. It could be a software or hardware problem. Either way, you’re probably looking to boot it up normally again.

Here’s a few things you could run through to fix the problem and get your Mac working again. This includes some simple checks and software resets as a first step. Then we can move on to checking on your hardware and repairing any possible faults.

Having said that, Apple computers have sophisticated designs. Fixing Apple computers is a challenge even for a computer technician who is only specialized in Windows PC. DIY repair for a novice user is often not possible. After you’ve gone through the tips below and your computer still doesn’t work, it’s most likely that you need professional computer repair services.

Apple Mac boot up issues

While it may seem alarming to find that your Mac isn’t booting up, there’s not much to worry about as you still have a lot of options to fix it. This is because your Mac still turns on, it’s just that it’s not booting to macOS. Now this can look like different errors too, and come from different kinds of software or hardware failure. These boot up errors can look like a few of these scenarios:

  • Blank screen at boot: Your Mac turns on and lights up, but gets stuck on a blank screen forever. You can only solve this by restarting the Mac.
  • Shuts down at boot: In this scenario, your Mac does turn on, but shuts down by itself during boot.
  • Question mark folder icon: This is likely a hard drive issue. A folder with a question mark on it means that your startup disk is not working or that your device can’t find a working operating system on it.
  • Infinite loading bar: Usually your Mac shouldn’t take too long to boot to macOS, or need to put you through a loading bar. When this does happen, it may seem like the loading bar is taking forever to complete, or not at all. This is also known to be a hard drive issue.

Errors that appear during startup usually indicates that there’s a problem with the procedure and hardware involved with the Mac startup process. There are a few things that your Mac needs to go through to boot successfully, and that involves both its software settings and essential hardware. Your Mac needs the hard drive, logic board, RAM, and video card to work properly in order to boot successfully to macOS. Software issues could also cause disruptions to the boot process. While there are some known and obvious issues like hard drive failure, other errors need more thorough testing to diagnose.

What to do with a Mac that won’t boot

To fix your boot up issue, we should first start out by solving any possible software issues, then onto hardware testing and repair. This involves some software and system resets.

1. Manually perform a hard shutdown

A hard shutdown is what you would normally do when your computer freezes up and doesn’t respond to any keys or clicks. If your Mac gets stuck on a blank screen or loading screen, you can manually shut down and restart it to try turning it on again.

A restart could possibly solve some software bugs and help you successfully boot up your Mac. To perform a hard shutdown, just press and hold the power button on your Mac for about 6 seconds until it powers down.

Restarting your computer can possibly boot it up again so you can do more thorough tests on your hardware. Remember though, only do hard shutdowns when you really need to. Always turn off your computer the normal way, that is by clicking the “Shut Down” option from the Apple logo dropdown menu. Hard shutdowns is an abrupt way to turn off your Mac, it can cause software problems or even data loss on unsaved work.

2. NVRAM / PRAM and SMC resets

NVRAM / PRAM reset

The parameter RAM (PRAM) or non-volatile RAM (NVRAM) are both small amounts of memory that stores macOS boot up information. They both are essentially the same thing, just that modern Macs use NVRAM over PRAM. The NVRAM stores less information, just the essentials like the time zone, screen resolution, and your selected startup disk.

When your Mac is taking forever to boot, resetting the NVRAM could be helpful. This resolves startup disk issues back to default settings.

To reset the NVRAM or PRAM, restart your Mac and hold down Command + Option + P + R for 20 seconds. Your Mac may restart. Release the keys and let your Mac start up normally. For older Macs that chime at boot, hold the four keys until you hear a second chime.

SMC reset

The System Management Controller (SMC) is another hardware component that stores key startup settings. It also stores information related to fan and temperature control, keyboard and status lights, and so much more. You could experience problems with power, battery, or slow performance if the SMC is malfunctioning.

Giving it a reset to defaults could resolve your system problems. Depending on your Mac’s model, there are a few ways to reset the SMC:

  • Desktop Macs: Disconnect power cord and wait about 15 seconds before plugging it back in. Wait 5 seconds before turning the Mac on.
  • Macbook laptops with T2 chip: Shut down your Mac, then hold the power button for 10 seconds. Wait a few seconds before turning on your Mac. Another way is by shutting down your Mac and then holding down Control + Option + Shift (may turn on the Mac). Hold the three keys for 7 seconds, then press and hold the power button as well. If your Mac is on, it will turn off after holding down the keys for another 7 seconds. Release the keys and wait before turning on the Mac.
  • Macbook laptops with no T2 chip: Shut down and unplug your Mac. Then hold down Control + Shift + Option on the left, and the power button on the right. Do this for 10 seconds, then plug in the power adaptor and turn on the Mac.

While these two methods can solve some small issues, there’s no guarantee that it can fix your problem. This is especially so when you have a serious hardware issue. Still, it’s worth a try before moving on to testing your hardware.

3. Reset your Mac

Restarting your Mac can only do so much. For more ways to resolve possible software issues, you can also try reinstalling macOS. Before doing so, do make sure you have a backup of your data either from Time Machine or just a copy of your files on an external drive or iCloud. That way you have your important data safe after resetting your Mac.

How to reinstall macOS

If your Mac is having trouble booting up with the current OS, reinstalling a new one is something you could try. Restart your Mac, and hold down Command + R when it is booting up again. This will get you to macOS Recovery. Select “Reinstall macOS”, and your Mac should download and install the right macOS for you.

4. Test and diagnose your Mac’s hardware

Even if you can successfully boot up your Mac again, it’s still important to run tests to find possible issues on your system. The problem could happen again, or even get worse. So it could be beneficial to fix things before they get worse. You can start with Apple Diagnostics, then run more in-depth tests on specific parts of your Mac’s hardware.

Apple Diagnostics is a built-in diagnostic tool that all Apple Mac users have. It is used as a basic hardware test, where you can test hardware like the hard drive, RAM, and battery. It also comes in handy when you can’t boot up your Mac properly, as you only need to turn on your Mac to run it.

To run Apple Diagnostics, restart your Mac and press the D key. You should reach a language selection screen. After you make your selection, a progress bar that indicates that Apple Diagnostics is checking your Mac will appear. If it finds any issues, Apple Diagnostics will suggest solutions and provide reference codes so you can take them to a Genius for help.

As a basic diagnostic tool, Apple Diagnostics might not be able to run the thorough tests that your Mac needs. You might not want to stop here and continue with more testing. This brings us to testing specific parts of the Mac that might be causing your startup issues. The parts essential for normal macOS startup include the hard drive, logic board, RAM, and video card, so we should go from there.

When you turn on your Mac, it uses macOS to boot up. This is stored on your hard drive, the startup disk for your Mac. It will certainly run into trouble during boot if your hard drive is faulty. The startup files and OS could be damaged or corrupted by bad sectors, making them useless.

Hard drives do fail over time, and are actually the most common cause of computer startup issues. For Mac users, hard drive failure could cause errors like the question mark folder or infinite loading bar at boot, and slow down performance.

To find out whether your hard drive is malfunctioning, you can use Disk Utility or hard drive analysis software to test it. You can find Disk Utility in the same spot that we mentioned above, from macOS Recovery (Command + R at boot). There you can run First Aid to test and mark off or repair bad sectors.

For more extensive hard drive testing, use hard drive analysis software like WD Data Lifeguard. With this method, we recommend taking out your hard drive and testing it on a different desktop Mac via a USB to SATA enclosure box. This ensures the drive’s isolation and removes other factors that could affect the tests.

If your Mac does have a hard drive failure, all you need to do is replace the drive entirely. It’s an easy process that doesn’t need many tools to fix. Learn more about fixing an Apple hard drive in our guide “5 steps that will help you repair an Apple hard drive”.

Logic board, RAM, and video card faults

The other parts on your Mac that are required for startup is the logic board, RAM, and video card. Failure in either part could also cause your Mac to not boot up properly. So we still have to do a little testing on these parts.

We know that the OS is stored on the hard drive, but some may not know why these three parts are essential for boot up. Simply put, the logic board is the main communication circuit of the entire Mac. Without it, none of the parts can interact or work with each other, nothing will work. Meanwhile, the RAM is responsible for multitasking and storing system settings, and the video card generates a constant visual feed on the screen.

On most Macbook laptops these days, the RAM and video card are both embedded on the logic board. This makes them a part of the logic board and cannot be taken out separately. Desktop Macs are different, models like the Mac Pro have better accessibility to its hardware.

How to test for logic board failure

There is no direct way to diagnose a logic board, it is simply a circuit board where connective points and parts are put on. However, if Apple Diagnostics does find issues with the SMC, you can conclude a logic board failure. The SMC is a small part of the logic board that the Apple Diagnostics can detect issues on.

Otherwise, the only way to test a logic board is by eliminating other issues that involve the hard drive, RAM, and video card. If you don’t find any problems with the other parts but the problem persists, then you might have a logic board issue. Once you’ve run through all these procedures, you should be able to get an idea on how to fix your Mac. Some of these repairs are quite easy to complete, such as hard drive replacements. But for more complicated repairs like logic board replacements, you might want to call in an expert to help you out.

6 easy tools and tricks to test and diagnose your laptop

Is your laptop acting up but you have no idea what’s wrong? All you need are some simple tools and a little time to figure out what might be the problem. Computer hardware issues can look like a range of things and can be quite tricky to detect immediately. Here are 6 simple tools and tricks to diagnose what might be causing your computer issues.

1. Computer built-in tools

Before we get into the more in-depth software tests, we should first cover the basic tools that are already on your computer. These built-in tests are where you should start out, when you want to figure out what’s wrong with your computer. Sometimes you have a general idea of what the issue is, but running built-in diagnostics tests can still be quite helpful.

Boot diagnostics

On every laptop or desktop computer, there is an option to run diagnostics before it boots up to its operating system. This is known as pre-boot diagnostics, boot diagnostics, or Apple Diagnostics for Mac users. It is a base-level test for its hardware, to find out possible faults and failures. You can test your laptop’s hardware like the hard drive, RAM, or battery.

To enter boot diagnostics, you’ll need the specific key required, depending on your laptop’s brand. This would be “Esc” for HP, “F12” for Dell, “Enter” for Lenovo, Acer, Asus, or IBM, “D” for Apple Macs with Intel processor, or holding down the power button for Apple Macs with Apple Silicon processor then Command-D. Restart your computer and press the corresponding key when it starts up. It should run on its own and report any possible issues that it can find.

Boot diagnostics can come in handy as a diagnostic solution when your laptop turns on but doesn’t boot. When you can’t get your computer to boot to Windows or MacOS to run software tests, starting boot diagnostics can be a helpful way to find out what’s going on.

Built-in support software

Other than boot diagnostics, you can also try using your computer’s branded support software. These software come preloaded on your Windows device, and can be used for troubleshooting and contacting online support. Apps like Dell’s Support Assist and HP’s Support Assistant are examples of this.

Now that we’ve covered the basic tools, let’s move on to some dedicated software tools for testing specific parts of your laptop. Some of these methods may require some disassembly, but it’s nothing too difficult for any computer user.

2. Testing a hard disk drive

“Chkdsk” is a built-in tool in all Windows computers used to test and attempt repairs on hard drives. It is a pretty useful tool for hard drive testing, where it can mark off or possibly repair bad sectors. Type in “chkdsk” as a command, or go to the “Properties” window of your hard drive and run it from the “Tools” panel.

Disk Utilities (Apple Mac)

Similar to chkdsk, running First Aid from Disk Utilities can also attempt repairs or isolate bad sectors that are harming the drive’s health. If a hard drive failure is detected, it can also offer support solutions to repair the hard drive.

Dedicated analysis software

Dedicated hard drive analysis software like Seatools or WD Data Lifeguard are some great free tools to test your hard drive. You can install and use it on your current laptop to test your hard drive for errors.

For a more thorough test that can get you better results, you may also take out your drive and test it separately. This would usually be done on a desktop computer. You’ll need a SATA to USB enclosure box for this as well. The enclosure box powers the hard drive separately from the desktop computer, so this keeps it isolated for in-depth testing.

These extensive tests on your hard drive will most probably take longer than boot diagnostics or chkdsk. But it can offer some conclusive results about your hard drives and what you should do next. Learn more about testing and repairing a faulty hard drive for Dell, HP, or Apple computer users.

3. Tools for solid-state drives

A lot of modern laptops these days come with solid-state drives instead of hard disk drives as the main storage drive. This is because of the technological advances that make SSDs a much better option over traditional spinning hard drives.

While SSDs are much more durable than HDDs, they will still eventually start to fail after a period of prolonged use. And just like HHDs, SSD manufacturers do make free companion software tools for analysing and testing the drive for faults. This would be apps like Samsung Magician and Intel SSD Toolbox.

4. RAM failure testing

A RAM analysis software that most techs recommend would be Memtest86. You can install it right away and test your RAM with it on your laptop. Or you can do it on a desktop computer.

Another easy way to test your RAM is by swapping out the RAM chip with a spare one and see if the problem persists. This works great in fixing situations like startup issues where you can’t boot up or turn on your laptop.

However, most laptops have their RAM chips embedded on the motherboard these days, and that makes it impossible to swap out the RAM. Detachable RAM chips are more common on older laptop models and desktop computers.

5. Troubleshooting lines and distortion on laptop screens

Lines or image distortion on your screen would generally lead you to think you have a screen failure right? Sometimes it’s not that easy to tell just by looking at it and accessing the problem visually on the screen.

Image distortion can definitely indicate a screen failure, but sometimes your laptop may be experiencing a video card failure instead. When your laptop screen is showing distortion like artifacting or columns of different colours instead of thin lines, that’s a sign of video card failure. Another sign of video card failure could also be a laptop that won’t turn on at all.

It’s not always easy to diagnose screen or video card issues, so here’s a straightforward trick to find out: Connect your laptop to an external monitor or your TV via an HDMI cable. If the image looks normal on the second display, you have a faulty laptop screen. If the image remains distorted or does not appear on the display at all, you have a video card issue. 6. Stress testing your video card

Another way to test the status and perform stress tests on the performance of your GPU is by using dedicated analysis software. Using Geeks3D’s Furmark is an effortless way to do so. HP computer repairs 101

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is an American multinational company that has been making computers, laptops and other electronic for 80+ years.

Without a doubt, HP computers are popular and amongst the best in the market. Many HP computers are well built and reliable. But, they are not immune to breakdowns.

I’ll show you what problems HP computers commonly have, how & where you can get it repaired, plus what you can do first yourself, what manufacturers can and cannot help you with.

First, let’s get to know a bit more about Hewlett-Packard (HP) computers.

Is HP computer good?

Yes. But, not in the best 3 in my opinion.

There is no denying that HP is one of the biggest computer PC makers in the world, for a long time, competing with other big names: Dell, Apple, Lenovo, ASUS etc.

HP has been in business since 1939. If you’ve bought yourself a HP computer, you can be assured that it is a respectable brand.

In 2014, HP was planning to get out of PC and printer businesses due to the rise of tablets, low-cost PC makers in Asia, and the rise of Apple.

Then, in 2011, they announced that they’d keep their PC business.

Today you’ll still find many HP computers, laptops in major retailers like JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, Harvey Norman. HP still make fairly decent computers in my opinion.

Performance-wise, HP offers a wide range of computers, laptops with different specifications, at different prices to suit every budget. You can also customise specs online on HP website to purchase directly.

How HP computers compare to Dell, Lenovo, Apple and other PCs

Having seen thousands of computers, PCs, my opinion is that HP still competes well with Dell, Lenovo. These manufacturers are better than Acer, ASUS. However, Acer and ASUS are priced better.

Apple has its own operating system (macOS), while HP computers mainly run on Windows OS. Thus, I won’t compare HP to Apple here. But, it’s generally regarded that Apple is more “premium” than HP.

Like Dell and Lenovo PC, HP offers a number of series in their computers.

For home and personal use, HP offers Pavilion, OMEN, Essential, Envy, Spectre series.

For business, HP offers EliteDesk, ProDesk, Workstations, ProBook, EliteBook, Elite DragonFly, ZBook, Chromebook.

HP Pavilion, Envy, Spectre computers are quite popular in Australia for home. Though, reliability amongst these computers (and other home, personal HP computers) is inconsistent.

When I said “inconsistent”, I mean it could last anywhere from 2 to 4 years before a repairs is needed. I’ve seen some of these HP computer models work well for 4 years, while some barely lasted 2 years then it was brought in for repairs.

HP ProDesk, EliteDesk computers are good, reliable and popular for businesses. HP ProBook, EliteBook are reasonably solid and reliable, but not the in the top.

At higher price point, HP Workstations computers are very solid, well built and reliable.

HP ProDesk, EliteDesk are quite reliable and excellent for work and business purposes. I generally recommended these computers to my clients along with Dell or Lenovo business-grade computers (namely Dell OptiPlex, Dell Precision, Lenovo ThinkCentre).

I might add Dell Vostro to this recommended list as well (for business use), but Dell Vostro isn’t as solid as Dell OptiPlex or Dell Precision. Dell Vostro might make this list (just) in my opinion.

With the right specifications, these business-grade computers can perform well for 3 to 5 years. They still need repairs and maintenance after that, which is unavoidable given the facts that technology advances quickly every year.

But, you can be assured that a repairs on HP ProDesk, EliteDesk is well worth it and it will keep going for a few more years.

If I need to buy a Windows computer for myself, I’d go for Dell or Lenovo first. Having said that, I’d definitely consider HP computers too.

However, this also depends on the purpose of the computer that I need to buy (home or business), and what budget I have.

For example, though you may fancy the idea of having a solid, reliable computer, but if your budget doesn’t allow you to purchase a HP ProDesk or EliteDesk then you may have to compromise and opt for HP Pavilion instead, which is less reliable.

Is HP PC computer reliable?

This varies depending on series, models.

HP Pavilion, Envy, OMEN, Essential, Spectre are for home and personal use. Their reliability is inconsistent.

These computer series could last 2 to 4 years, sometime to 5+ years before a repairs is needed.

At higher prices, business-series HP computers, HP EliteBook, ProBook etc as I mentioned above are more reliable.

Still, business-grade HP computers will have problems after 3-5 years and need to be repaired.

HP Workstations computers are solid, reliable and could last even longer.

How you use your computer also affects its lifespan. If you’re computer for everyday basic use (email, word processing, internet surfing, watching videos), your computer will last slightly longer provided that you look after it well.

If you play games and often push the computer to its limit, it will more likely break sooner than later.

Think about your car, if you take it to drag racing every weekend, it will need servicing more often. Same thing applies to your computer.

Specifications, models of your computer also affect its lifespan. For example, many computers with solid state drive (SSD) will perform faster and last longer than ones with traditional standard hard drive (HDD).

Another thing to keep in mind is that, I’m referring to HP PC, computers, laptops that you use for home, school, or work. The term “PC” refers to “personal computer”.

Some HP computers are made for commercial use, such as HP ProLiant server computers. These computers are commercial-grade, not personal computers, hence they are built for 24 hour operation, 365 days a year.

These commercial-grade computers are remarkably reliable and have longer lifespan. But this is out of the scope of this post.

What problems HP PC computers commonly have

All HP PC computers will eventually break down after 3 to 5 years and need repairs.

Below is problems that HP computers may have, even though you have done nothing wrong to it:

  • HP computer does not turn on at all.
  • Freezing problem. Not responding. Not opening apps. Not responsive.
  • Very slow, taking a long time to start up and to open apps, documents.
  • An error message shows “No bootable device” at startup.
  • Smart failure predicted on hard drive warning at startup.
  • Laptop does not charge. The light where the charge plugs remains off.
  • Damages near hinge area, at the lower corner of the screen. This could lead to metal hinge pushing the front glass screen out.No, your ex-girlfriend didn’t drop your laptop, ask her to come back! It wasn’t her fault. I’ve seen this issues in many HP laptops.

  • Computer turns on and hangs on the HP splash screen (POST screen).
  • Turns on to a loading screen and never finishes loading. The spinning wheel goes on forever.
  • PC boots to startup-repair mode but none of the options will boot to Windows.
  • Computer turns off itself, blacks out and shut down without warning.
  • Keyboard keys are sticky, not responding or jammed. This is typical when sugary drink was spilt onto keyboard.
  • Touchpad (aka trackpad) cursor does not move properly, it may jump around, or clicking / opening apps randomly.
  • Loud noise from fan. The fan makes clunky, or scratching noise.
  • Wireless in laptop does not work. It does not detect any wireless network in the area or unable to connect to any WiFi network.
  • Battery in laptop does not hold charge for long. It may only last for minutes, or suddenly turns off even though it has some charge left.
  • Battery in HP laptop has stopped working completely. The laptop needs to be plugged in with its charger to work. If you unplug the charger, the laptop turns off immediately.
  • Battery in HP laptop shows a cross sign in its status.

Other than that, your HP computer may break down because of accidents such as drop, water liquid spill, power surge etc.

  • Impact damages such as drop, knock.
  • Cracked screen due to drop, knock, or an object was left on keyboard while you close the screen.
  • Water liquid spill damage on HP laptops, or desktop HP computer (less common).
  • Virus spyware problem.
  • Power outage, power surge causing laptop not turning on.
  • Overheating problem, laptop computer gets really hot and may turn off itself. This is caused by dust clogging fan and heatsink inside the computer.

Though we mainly do PC repairs, I’ve had commercial-grade HP computers in for repairs and have repaired a number of them, namely HP ProLiant servers.

Repairs on HP servers are not as common due to the facts that they last longer than a typical home PC computer.

Why HP computers break down

If your HP computer has virus, you will see obvious signs. For example, random unwanted popups that won’t go away, constant warnings of virus, you get redirected to unwanted web pages.

You may have opened a wrong file, or email attachment that contained viruses on your computer that led to the virus getting in the laptop.

Your antivirus software may not have picked up the virus. Having an antivirus does not guarantee your computer will be virus-free. It’s like police fighting criminals, there will always be criminals.

Most virus issues happen inside Windows. Your computer would boot to Windows and the above virus symptoms show up.

Other reasons are hardware fault / failure.

Hardware faults include: hard drive, motherboard, RAM, video card failure, worn-out battery, etc.

There is no single reason for computers to break down. It is often difficult to trace back to find the exact cause of the issue.

Below is common causes for HP computers to break:

  • Age of the computer: After 3 to 4 years, parts inside your computers would have worn out and due for repairs or replacement.
  • Manufacturing problems: human errors can happen in production line that lead to unexpected component failure later on.
  • Computer user error such as knock, drop, water liquid spill as mentioned above. Sometimes this may happen without your knowledge.
  • Humidity: Wet weather could be the blame for your laptop problems. Moisture in the air can short components inside computers.
  • Overheating problems: every HP computer has a cooling fan inside. Clogged dust, rust over the years causes overheating problem which lead to component failure.
  • “Planned obsolescence”: similar to the light bulb conspiracy, and it’s necessary in technology. You can read more about planned obsolescence of tech on BBC.
  • Power outage power surge: A storm, lightning strike in the area can kill your computer. Power board with surge protector is inadequate to prevent this from happening.
  • Consumable parts: every battery is a consumable part. HP computer batteries are expected to last 2 to 4 years and they degrade over time. This is perfectly normal.
  • Third-party manufacturer’s errors: HP cannot manufacture everything. Many parts are actually manufactured by third-party manufacturers. These manufacturers may have had errors in their production line. For example, graphics card in HP computers are manufactured by Intel, AMD or nVidia.
  • Bugs: I’m referring to real bugs and insects here. Cockroaches could have gone inside your laptops and caused troubles.

What you can try first yourself to fix the problem

There are basic troubleshooting that you can try first before sending your computer to repairs.

If it’s software problem such as virus, we will show you how to fix it below.

If it’s hardware problem, check your warranty cover first. Your computer might be covered by warranty from your supplier. Standard warranty for new computers is 1 or 2 years. You may have purchased extended warranty.

If any of these applies, contact your place or purchase. This is your best option. The repairs will be Free.

If the damage is caused by your own wrong-doing such as drop, water spill damages, it’s not covered by warranty.

Your insurance may cover this though. Some insurance policies cover accidental damages. Go through your insurance policy to find out.

Other than that, DIY repairs or paying for professional computer repairers will be your options.

It is recommended to always have backup of your data before any repair is attempted. Data loss may occur during any computer repair process.

How to test, diagnose HP PC computers

How do I know if it’s software or hardware issue?

For most, there is an easy way to tell the difference between software and hardware issue.

Most software issues, such as virus, happens after your HP computer has booted to Windows.

If your HP computer has problems before Windows could boot, it is most likely a hardware problem. In facts, you can almost be certain that it is a hardware fault.

If it has issues after Windows has booted successfully, it could be either software or hardware fault. This is a little harder to tell.

Restart your computer

Restarting your computer fixes many problems!

Restart it now if you haven’t done so.

Remove then reinsert battery from your HP laptop (if possible)

This is another quick one that you should try before anything else.

Unplug the charger, look at the back of your HP laptop, see if it has a user-removable battery.

If it has, you will find 2 latches that you can slide to pop out the battery.

After the battery has been removed, hold down the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any left-over power from your HP laptop.

Reinsert the battery, press the power button once to turn it back on and see if the problem is resolved.

How to diagnose HP computer hardware

HP computers have built-in diagnostic tools.

This is a benefit of owning HP computers. HP provides built-in diagnostic tools for end-users to use.

Dell, Apple, and some Lenovo models also provide this. While Acer, ASUS and many others do not.

To access this diagnostic tools, after pressing the power button to turn on your HP computer, repeatedly press Esc key until you see a startup menu.

Select System Diagnostics, or you could press F2 key.

This is an easy, built-in general hardware diagnostic test that you can use to check on the status of hardware across your computer, like the hard drive, RAM, and video card.

If any of the parts fails the test, it means the part is faulty and needs to be replaced.

If it passes all the test, it does not mean that the parts are in working order. Keep in mind that this is free, user-friendly built-in tools provided by HP only.

You can repeat the tests multiple times to increase its accuracy. If any of the tests show a part is fault, it means the part is indeed faulty.

Reinstalling Windows

If the problem persists and you’re still unsure, reinstalling Windows (also called “Reset Windows”) could also be a great way to resolve software issues.

Just hold down the Esc key after restarting the computer to reach the startup menu, then F11 for System Recovery options. You can then choose to reset your computer there to factory settings.

If your HP computer is completely dead

In the above, I’ve covered the instance where your HP computer turns on but has trouble booting up.

If your HP computer fails to turn on, it’s completely dead completely, you won’t be able to do any of the pre-boot diagnostic as mentioned.

In this case, it’s possible that it has a faulty power supply unit (also called the charger if it’s a HP laptop), or damaged power socket (for HP laptops only), or dead motherboard.

A faulty power supply unit is generally easy to test by simply using a working power supply unit to test (if you have a spare one). Or you could also use a multimeter to test the current one.

If you don’t have a spare working charger for your HP laptop, take it to JB Hi-Fi or Harvey Norman asking to buy one and ask if you can quickly try it out before you buy.

While it used to be common for the power socket to be damaged in laptops, HP (and other manufacturers) have improved design and damages on power socket are now less common. It still happens, but not as frequently as it used to.

Testing the power socket is a much harder job for a normal computer user. It involves taking the laptop apart and test its voltage output, inspecting its cosmetic condition.

For this problem, it is most likely that a professional computer repairs is required. Pulling the computer apart, testing with spare parts, multimeter is beyond most regular computer user’s knowledge.

I don’t recommend you to attempt to test the power socket if you’re not experienced with this. It’s difficult and it is more likely that there is nothing wrong with the power socket.

After you’ve done diagnostic using HP’s built-in tools, you might have a better ideas about what’s wrong with your computer.

  • Laptop keyboard issues most likely will need a new keyboard. Since HP has changed to new slim design for many laptop models, DIY at home repairs is difficult.

YouTube is also an excellent source for video step by step guide on how to disassemble, troubleshoot and repair your HP laptops. Simply search for your computer model plus “screen replacement”, or “disassembly” to find relevant guides.

HP Support Community is also good source to ask questions to get answers from community members.

Keep in mind that the members are not HP employees, they do not represent HP in anyway. Don’t expect HP customer support to assist you on this online forum.

Another place to look for is HP service manual. HP provides some video service manuals on YouTube which is quite handy. You’ll find HP’s official service manual in the video. This is useful because the videos are created by HP for servicing purpose without any clickbait or marketing incentives.

DIY repairs isn’t for everyone. You need to have some technical knowledge to attempt DIY repairs.

Best places to find HP computer repair centres in Sydney

With seeking professional HP computer repair centres, you have only 2 options:

  • Repairs with the manufacturer – official HP repair centres, in this case.
  • Repairs with third-party HP PC repair centres / local repairers (eg PC computer repair shops). These third-party HP repair centres are not owned nor supervised by HP. They are independent local businesses.

Possibly a third option is asking your employer’s company IT department who may have in-house IT employees to assist you first.

If your laptop has water damages, unfortunately, HP (and all other manufacturers) cannot repair water damaged laptops. We’ll explain further below.

HP do not have any retail stores in Australia for you to visit, unlike Apple store, Microsoft and Samsung stores.

The only option for you to get repairs by HP is to send it off to one of their official HP repair service centres (if they even have one in Australia). This means turn-around time is weeks away, if not months.

According to HP website, there is no authorised HP service centre in Australia. Your only option is to call HP directly to make an enquiry. I’m not sure if they would have a repair centre for you to send to.

This is where third-party HP computer PC repair service centres can help you. It might be your only option.

There are third-party HP computer repair centres / stores just about everywhere in Sydney. Third-party local HP computer repair centres, together with their network of local suppliers, can serve customers in every corner.

What official HP repair centres can and cannot help you with

If you decide to send your computer directly to an official HP repair centres for services, keep in mind that, HP, and most other manufacturers, only fixes a limited number of issues on your computer:

  • Replace screen for your laptops.
  • Replace battery for your laptops.
  • Replace defective parts that are covered by a recall program.
  • Replace damaged parts under certain conditions (eg not damaged by water spill).

Benefits of repairing with official HP repair centres directly is that you are guaranteed to have original genuine parts installed of your computer, plus good – high quality control.

The downside is that, their repair service is very limited and time consuming. It could take weeks or months to get it repaired by HP, if it’s even possible.

I’m sorry to tell you that, more often it’s not possible to get repairs with official HP repair centres. They are manufacturers, not repairers. Repairs is simply not their main business.

For good reasons, HP will not do the followings:

  • Repair water, liquid spill damaged HP computers.
  • Repair old HP computer models (3 or 4+ year old computers).
  • Fix sticky keyboard key problem.
  • Manual removal of virus and spyware.
  • Back up or recover your data from your PC.
  • Upgrade your HP computer to make it run faster.
  • Replace parts with non-HP parts or better ones.
  • Repair on computers that had been repaired previously by a third-party technician.

In facts, it’s not just HP, all manufacturers do not provide such services. It’s not possible for them to do so, for many reasons.

Don’t waste your time seeking help from HP for the above.

It is likely that they will encourage you to purchase a new computer.

Unlike manufacturers, local third-party HP computer repair centres will repair what HP can, plus the things that HP cannot repair for you.

Because, it is in those third-party, local HP computer repairers’ best interests to repair your computer. It is within their expertise and is their main business to do so (they are not retailers nor manufacturers).

Repairs at a third-party HP computer repair centres often will cost you less than at manufacturers as well.

How much does it cost to repair my HP computer PC?

The price varies depending the type of repair, make and model of your HP computer. There is no ball-park figure nor one-size-fit-all.

You will find that most (if not all) HP computer repair centres, including official HP and third-party ones, do not give quotes without first checking your computer, except obvious issues such as battery or screen replacement.

This is common for many reasons:

  • No HP repair centres employ 100% technicians. Phone calls may be answered by reception, or non-technical staff.
  • Inconsistent prices: prices change as suppliers change prices, market price changes.
  • Any prices without written form cannot be tracked.
  • Giving prices without seeing the computer often leads to incorrect prices and unhappy customer experience.
  • It will take significant time to diagnose and quote over the phone. The repair technicians need to focus on doing repairs instead of answering phone calls.

Since official HP repair centres do not disclose their repair prices to the public, I cannot give guidelines on how much official HP repair centres would charge for their repair services (or if they are willing to provide repairs).

For third-party HP repair centres, generally if your computer has software issue (eg virus), it may cost $50, $100 – $200.

Some HP repairers charge by hourly rate hence it varies depending how many hours you will take up with the technician. The more questions you have, the more work you have to get done, the more expensive it’ll get.

If your computer has hardware issue (i.e. hard drive failure, broken screen), it will involve cost for spare part plus labour, which price may vary $150-$1,000+.

I know, it’s a big range, but the price can vary significantly indeed. For most HP home computers though, it’s likely that it will be a few hundreds or less (AUD).

As a general rule, the more expensive your computer is, the more expensive it may cost to fix.

For example, the HP 13-aw0059TU laptop has stunning touch screen display. It’s a top end model. If you breaks this laptop screen, it will cost you more than $1,000 to replace.

While a regular HP home laptop screen repairs will cost $200 to $500 only.

How long does it take to repair my HP computer?

This varies depending on the problem, spare part availability and which computer repairer you use (official HP repair centres, or third-party HP computer repair centres).

HP, the manufacturer, may need a few weeks, or even months, to complete a repairs because they do not have retail stores.

You’ll need to send your computer to their repair service center or schedule a technician to come onsite.

While many third-party, local HP computer PC repair centres can provide same day repairs.

10 Computer myths debunked: common misconceptions about computer repair

Just like urban legends, there are a few common misconceptions about computer repair that a lot of people believe. Because of how they’ve been talked about so much, people do start to believe them. However, some of these are not true. Oftentimes believing in these myths can lead to misdiagnosis or improper treatment of computer issues. They could make more trouble without fixing the real issue.

Even if some of these myths were true at some point of time, computer technology has advanced so far ahead that a lot of things have changed since then. Those truths don’t apply anymore, and become myths.

As computer repair experts, we thought we’d shed some light on these common misconceptions and bust these myths. Here are the top 10 computer repair myths busted.

1. We can repair only the failed part of a whole component

Most of the time when a piece of computer hardware is failing, you’ll need a full replacement of the part. Computer users will sometimes request to replace only a small part of the component, without understanding how the hardware works. Of course, this doesn’t apply to all computer parts, some parts we can indeed fix the problem area on its own.

Small parts that require complete replacements

An example of this would be laptop video card repairs. In most laptops, the video card is mounted and embedded on the motherboard. That means that it’s impossible to take it out from the motherboard without breaking it. So a laptop video card replacement essentially means a motherboard replacement. There is an exception though, for the Apple Macbook Pro 15-inch 2011 model. The video card on this Macbook is a known issue, which created a demand for an advanced method to replace the video card on its own.

On desktop iMacs from 2012 and onwards, a cracked glass panel on the screen would also call for a complete screen replacement. It is a fragile 27-inch screen panel, and cannot be replaced on its own. This would cost at least $700 to replace the whole screen.

For laptop keyboards, even when one key is not working properly, the whole keyboard needs to be replaced. Each key cap that is mounted on the keyboard is connected to its mechanics, and replacing the single key won’t fix the problem. The key could be jammed, or have accumulated rust on its connective points. Either way, we have to replace the whole keyboard to fix a keyboard failure.

Misdiagnosis?

Sometimes users might misdiagnose their laptop problems as well and request single replacements for the wrong part. We’ve gotten requests over the phone to replace the laptop screen hinge, which is a solid metal part that is quite hard to break. It usually is either the front bezel or back cover of the screen, or the upper cover of the keyboard that is actually broken. These parts may also require complete replacement of the screen, depending on the model of laptop.

2. Batteries last forever

Contrary to some belief, laptop batteries are consumable parts. They last 2-4 years, depending on use and charging cycles. We can expect these batteries to fail just in the same way as the batteries in toys, cameras, and phones.

Failing laptops can expand, leak corrosive liquid, or even heat up quickly and catch fire. So if you notice an error message like “service battery”, or “replace battery”, it’s best you get that checked out as soon as possible.

3. You need to drain your laptop’s power before charging the battery

Laptop batteries are lithium-ion batteries, which allow you to charge it many times without harming its battery life. It will continue to hold charge even after multiple charge cycles.

Some computer users believe that it would benefit battery life to drain the laptop’s power before charging it again. There’s actually no real proof of this, and you can even leave the power cable plugged in the whole time you use the laptop as well.

4. My laptop is not turning on because of a dead battery

Unless your laptop is not plugged in and has no power, this statement is not true. A laptop does not need a working battery to turn on. As long as it has a power supply from the charging cable, it should turn on and boot up just fine.

When a laptop is not turning on at all, this would usually mean a more serious hardware issue. A part essential to the start up process may be faulty, and is causing your laptop to be unresponsive. You could likely have a hard drive or motherboard issue, or even have a faulty video card or RAM. Just remember, you probably don’t need a battery replacement when you can’t turn on your laptop.

5. Having lots of files will slow down your computer

Will having lots of files clog up your system and slow your computer down? The answer is, no. Having more files on your hard drive will only take up its storage space, and not its performance.

The thing that will slow down your computer is having lots of startup programs. These are apps that start running once you boot up your computer. This can cause slow boot up times, or slow down your computer’s performance. You can check on the impact of these startup programs from the “startup” tab of Task Manager. You may also disable these apps from starting automatically from boot up, to smooth things over.

6. A virus is making my computer go crazy

Computer viruses are often the scapegoats of computer issues. They are often blamed for most computer issues, which most of the time turn out to be a hardware issue. Most computer users don’t expect their hardware to fail, so they turn to thinking that they have a virus.

Something like the keyboard making jumbled or incorrect input or image distortions are often incorrectly thought to be virus infections. These are actually hardware failures that need replacing. A computer virus is a program that infects your OS, and can’t damage your hardware.

To be fair, computer virus infections can cause significant changes. Just not damage. Some signs of a virus infection include inappropriate pop-up windows, browser homepage changes, slow performance, and data security breaches. To combat this, make sure you’re browsing the web safely and install antivirus software to protect yourself.

7. Antivirus will stop me from having any computer virus

While antivirus can help you browse the web safely and protect your computer from viruses, there’s no guarantee. Even with a paid subscription of the best antivirus software, computer viruses today are very advanced and can be smart enough to find a way in.

Think of it this way: When we are sick, medicine or treatment from a doctor will cure your illness, but will not protect you from illness forever. Antivirus works the same way, it is definitely useful, but is not effective 100%.

8. Magnets can harm hard drives

Because of how magnets can wipe floppy disks, some continue to believe that magnets can harm other storage devices like hard drives. Hard drives are quite sturdy, and can’t fall from a magnet. Unless it gets hit by substantial force, the hard drive cannot be damaged with simple domestic magnets.

The only magnets that can destroy a hard drive are industrial-strength ones only found in labs or junkyards. These are the magnets that can distort the drive. Otherwise, the only way to wipe a drive is by using software to overwrite its memory sectors multiple times.

9. Wiping the hard drive can fix bad sectors

Wiping a hard drive can delete everything off the drive, including all the files and the OS as well. Users might come up with this idea to fix a failing hard drive, but it will not fix the drive. Bad sectors are permanently damaged parts of the hard drive.

Wiping the drive will only remove the data stored on it, but you can’t necessarily “delete” bad sectors. The only way to fix a faulty hard drive is by replacing it completely. If the damage is not that bad yet, disk repair utilities can sometimes solve some soft bad sectors, but that is not a true fix. It may only buy you another year or so on the drive, until you have to deal with it properly.

10. Only techs can fix computer issues

Just like other DIY projects, you totally can fix your computer by yourself! Most computer hardware replacements are pretty straightforward. You won’t need to get a technician to do them.

Take hard drive replacements for example — they are installed just the same way they are taken out, just by unplugging and plugging in the SATA cable. Even tech beginners can try this and nail it on their first try.

While more advanced computer repairs like motherboard or battery replacements should be left to the professionals, we do encourage DIY repairs. Not only can this save you the time and money, but the sense of accomplishment that comes with it is a pretty good feeling too.
